Each node is led by an expert in the subject discipline, supported by an advisory group of other practitioners of that discipline, and subject to selection and approval under a regular NASA Research Announcement.

NASA's Curiosity rover successfully drilled a 2-inch-deep hole in a target called 'Duluth' on May 20, 2018. It was the first rock sample captured by the drill since October 2016.
